Academic Information

John Wycliffe Theological College

Academic Information

1. Requirements for the Successful Completion of the Degree or the Diploma

Students must satisfy all the academic requirements for all required courses in order to graduate, which necessitates four years of full-time study. Students may also complete courses on a part-time basis.

2. Method of Teaching

Courses are currently offered by way of modules, and each course is treated as a unit. Lectures are typically spread over a one to two-week period, and are preceded by preliminary work prior to the start of class and followed by assignments after lectures end. Students must complete most of the prescribed reading before attending lectures, which ensures maximum benefit from the lectures in which interaction with the instructor is vital to learning. By means of this contact, we recognize that the lecturer's role is not to merely inform the students, but to facilitate their learning. Such an emphasis is essential to their ongoing studies in the work of gospel ministry.

3. Attendance

Students must attend all lectures, which are typically held at the North Riding campus. Due to the enrollment of numerous students from Kwa-Zulu Natal, we currently offer some courses in Chatsworth. Most lectures meet in the evenings and on Saturdays to accommodate the students who work to support themselves and their families. Pastors' conferences and student forums hosted by the English Reformed Church are also compulsory. Unexcused absences may lead to a course failure and even dismissal from the college. We do not offer correspondence studies.

4. Resources

We have a campus on the beautiful grounds of the English Reformed Church.

We have a library building which houses over 9000 catalogued books for the use of our students, and there is an extension library in Chatsworth, Kwa-Zulu Natal, for the use of the men from that area. Students also have on-site access to IT facilities (especially for contact with guest lecturers) and some of the latest computer resources related to biblical and theological research.

The John Wycliffe Theological Library is also open to members of the public who wish to make use of it for a small annual fee.

All lectures are audiotaped for the use of the students on the course to enable them to concentrate as fully as possible on the learning process in the class.

We have a college secretary/registrar and resident faculty member who are able to assist with queries.

5. Notes on the Curriculum

Please note the following information:
- A. The curriculum is subject to change by agreement of the church and university.
- B. Students are required to finish the majority of prescribed readings in advance of the lectures.

6. Ordination Year

For graduates who desire it, there is a further academic year for the cultivation of a graduate's ministerial gifts. Studies will be individually designed for the needs of the student.
